It’s also not a one-size-fits-all color; manufacturers have to match veining depth, density, and color variation to meet market expectations. A frequent complaint we hear is that people mistake printed quartz for real marble because the patterns look too perfect. Real marble has a depth and texture that can’t be fully replicated, especially under close inspection or with a magnifying glass. You’ll also notice slight porosity — marble is not impervious, so if you drop water on it and it absorbs slightly, that’s a sign of real stone. Another clue: real marble has a softer, more translucent appearance when held up to light, whereas quartz tends to have a more opaque, uniform finish. But here’s the catch — many people don’t realize that ‘Calacatta gold’ is now mostly used as a pattern name, not a material type. So if you’re buying a slab labeled ‘Calacatta gold’, it could be either natural marble or engineered quartz. Always ask for material certification and examine the slab in person.

What shouldn't you use on quartz countertops?
A frequent complaint we hear from homeowners is that they used harsh cleaners and ended up with dull spots or etching — even though quartz is non-porous. The main issue isn’t water or stains, but abrasives and acidic substances. Avoid using anything with high levels of citric acid, vinegar, or lemon juice, especially for extended periods. While a quick wipe with vinegar won’t ruin it, leaving it on overnight or using it daily can dull the surface over time. Also steer clear of abrasive scrubbers, steel wool, or scouring pads — they can scratch the finish, especially on polished surfaces. Harsh bleach solutions or products with ammonia, like some all-purpose cleaners, can also degrade the resin binder in the stone over time. For daily cleaning, a mild dish soap and water is usually sufficient. We’ve seen clients use Clorox wipes occasionally without issue, but they should be wiped off promptly — not left to sit. And never place hot pans directly on the surface — while quartz can handle heat better than granite, it’s not immune to thermal shock. Always use trivets or hot pads.
