What quartz counter top looks like onyx?
Onyx-look quartz countertops are designed to capture the beauty of natural onyx — the layered patterns, soft color transitions, and unique depth that make onyx so attractive in luxury interiors.
Some common onyx-inspired quartz designs include:
- White Onyx Quartz – usually features a white or ivory background with soft gray, beige, or translucent-looking layers. It is one of the most popular choices for modern luxury kitchens, bathroom vanities, and feature walls.
- Green Onyx Quartz – inspired by natural green onyx, with layered green tones ranging from soft sage to deeper jade shades, creating a more artistic and dramatic look.
- Honey Onyx Quartz – combines warm gold, amber, and cream tones, often used for hospitality projects, bars, and statement areas.
- Pink Onyx Quartz – features warm blush and soft neutral tones, bringing a softer and more decorative feeling to interiors.
- Backlit Onyx-look Quartz – developed for applications where designers want a glowing stone effect, such as hotel lobbies, bars, and feature walls.
From our experience as a quartz manufacturer, the biggest challenge in making onyx-look quartz is not only copying the color — it is recreating the depth and natural movement of the stone. Natural onyx has layers that appear to flow through the slab, and achieving that visual effect requires precise control of printing, coloring, and surface texture.
With our 3I quartz technology, including high-definition printing, multi-layer coloring, and advanced surface finishing, premium onyx-look quartz can achieve a very realistic stone appearance. In many finished installations, it is difficult to tell the difference between engineered quartz and natural onyx just by looking at the surface.
Which is better, quartz or onyx?
Installers usually recommend quartz over onyx for kitchens and high-traffic areas.
Onyx is a natural stone with a beautiful, translucent quality, but it’s porous, prone to staining, and requires regular sealing.
In real-world kitchens, especially those with kids or pets, onyx shows water spots, oil stains, and etching from acidic foods much faster than quartz.
Quartz, like the Crystalline Gray Onyx Quartz slab (GQ-T0130), is engineered with resin and ground stone—making it non-porous, heat-resistant up to around 300°F, and far more durable.
Most fabricators won’t even quote onyx for kitchen countertops because of the maintenance burden.
That said, onyx has a unique aesthetic that’s hard to match, especially under backlighting.
If you’re going for a dramatic look in a bathroom vanity or bar, onyx can be —just expect to wipe it down daily and avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
For practicality and longevity, quartz wins every time.
Grand Quartz Tech makes this type of slab in Thailand using full-body printing to capture the onyx look without the drawbacks.
